Document No. 1 of the Central Committee in 2023 proposed to “establish a big food concept and build a diversified food supply system”. General Secretary Xi Jinping first proposed to “establish a big food concept” at the Central Rural Work Conference as early as 2015 to ensure food supply while meeting the diversified needs of the people for a better life. Against the backdrop of tightening domestic resources and ecological constraints, it is increasingly difficult to increase food production at high levels in China. With the upgrading of the food consumption structure of China's urban and rural residents, the proportion of direct grain consumption in total consumption has gradually declined, and the indirect grain consumption of animal foods such as meat, eggs, and milk has steadily increased. However, according to the China Agricultural Outlook Report (2023-2032), it is predicted that China's total food production in 2027 will only be able to meet the food demand under the minimum nutritional goal, and there is still a gap of 13.7% and 24.5% from the total food demand to meet the nutritional goals of the medium and the highest level, so it is important to develop the production of diversified non-food items to alleviate the pressure on the supply of food and ease the The development and production of diversified non-food items to reduce the pressure on food supply and alleviate the tight balance between supply and demand is a new requirement for the agri-food system. Against this background, it was decided to hold the “2023 Academic Symposium of the Committee on Food Economy of the Chinese Society of Agricultural Economics and the 2023 China Food Economy Management Forum” on November 11, 2023, in Tianjin.
