【Pioneer Guidance · Brilliant Postgraduate Journey】Series Activities of the 2025 "Zhiyuan Guidance" Scientific Ethics and Academic Style Construction Month of the School of Economics and Management (I)
To thoroughly implement Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era and the spirit of the 20th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, put into practice the important speech delivered by General Secretary Xi Jinping at the Symposium of Scientists and his important remarks on scientific and technological innovation and academic style development, fully implement the guiding principles of the National Education Conference and the National Postgraduate Education Conference, and comply with requirements set out in documents including Several Opinions on Further Strengthening the Construction of Research Integrity, Opinions on Further Promoting the Spirit of Scientists and Strengthening the Development of Research Conduct and Academic Style, and Opinions on Accelerating the Reform and Development of Postgraduate Education in the New Era, the School of Economics and Management launched the 2025 "Zhiyuan · Guidance" series of activities on scientific ethics and academic style construction for all postgraduate students to enhance the relevance and effectiveness of ideological and political education for postgraduates.
On November 20, 2025, the school held the first event of the series in Lecture Hall 9 on the Hexi Campus, namely the mentor lecture series “Learn with Principles, Pursue Excellence through Steadfast Practice”. Representatives of the school’s master’s supervisors, young doctoral teachers and all postgraduate students attended the activity, which was hosted by Pang Shuyu, postgraduate counselor.
The mentor lecture series consisted of two parts: “Academic Ethics and Academic Norms” and “Understanding Innovative Contributions in Management Science Research”, delivered respectively by Professor Zhang Li and Professor Liu Chao, representatives of master supervisors.
Professor Zhang Li elaborated on three themes: fastening the first button of one’s academic career, red lines and pitfalls of academic misconduct, and how to become a rigorous scholar. She explained in detail how postgraduates can safeguard the lifeline of academic research and cited typical cases of academic misconduct, highlighting their severe adverse impacts on the research community and personal academic careers. Professor Zhang Li urged postgraduates to hold themselves to high standards, uphold scientific ethics, firmly resist academic misconduct, and jointly foster sound academic conduct.
From the perspective of a journal reviewer and drawing on her own research experience, Professor Liu Chao adopted a well-illustrated and accessible approach to systematically interpret core writing requirements, key research workflows, standardized writing methods and innovation logic for academic papers in management science. The lecture aims to help postgraduates consolidate their academic writing skills and strengthen logical thinking capacity. More importantly, it guides them to develop an innovation-centered research mindset. It clarifies that innovative contributions in management science research serve not only as the core criterion for passing peer review but also as a key driving force for disciplinary advancement.
The successful holding of the mentor lecture series deepened postgraduates’ understanding of scientific ethics and academic style construction, making them fully aware of the vital role of academic integrity and norms in research. The School of Economics and Management will continue to advance work on scientific ethics and academic style development for postgraduates and integrate related activities into daily postgraduate education and classroom teaching. Targeted lectures on different themes will be organized for students of different grades, covering the cultivation of rigorous scholarship, academic norms for topic selection and proposal writing, and thesis writing standards. The school will fully leverage the long-term mentor education mechanism and encourage postgraduates to uphold the academic spirit of diligent research, active exploration and bold innovation.
