School of Economics and Management Holds Series of Seminars on Implementing the OBE Concept (Financial Management Chapter) ——Fully Implement the OBE Concept and Steadily Improve the Quality of Student Training
To thoroughly implement the university’s “Excellent Talent Training 3.0” Program, better practice the OBE concept, enable professional courses to better support the training objectives of the Financial Management Program, and comprehensively improve the training quality of financial management students, all faculty members of the Department of Financial Management of the School of Economics and Management held a professional seminar themed “Fully Implement the OBE Concept and Steadily Improve the Quality of Student Training” in Room 302, Building 16, Hexi Campus on January 5, 2026.
First of all, Yu Donggen, Head of the Department of Financial Management, led all faculty to collectively study the 2025 talent training program for the Financial Management Program. Teachers systematically learned and mastered the training objectives, graduation requirements, logical structure of courses, curriculum arrangement and credit distribution.
Secondly, through group discussion, participants agreed that the Financial Management Program faces numerous opportunities and challenges amid the current economic environment. The main opportunities are as follows: (1) Diverse employment prospects. Graduates of Financial Management can work in many sectors including corporate finance departments, financial institutions, accounting firms, government and public sectors, educational and research institutions. (2) Demands in emerging fields. With the rise of fintech, corporate digital transformation calls for interdisciplinary talents proficient in both finance and data analysis, and market demand for such talents will keep rising. (3) New opportunities brought by internationalization. With the development of global economic integration, graduates with international vision and cross-cultural communication competence will be more competitive in multinational corporations and international financial institutions.
Meanwhile, the Financial Management Program also faces multiple challenges: (1) Mounting pressure from technological change. Traditional financial work may be replaced by AI technologies, so finance professionals need to learn and master modern information technologies. (2) Growing difficulty in risk management. Modern enterprises are confronted with a wider variety of risks, requiring financial managers to have stronger capabilities in risk identification, assessment and response. (3) Challenges of knowledge renewal. In the era of knowledge economy, intangible assets account for an increasing proportion of corporate asset structure. Finance professionals must continuously learn and update their knowledge to meet new requirements for investment decision-making.
Thirdly, based on the OBE concept, teachers identified certain deficiencies in how different professional courses they teach support program training objectives: First, previous professional teaching objectives were too general and poorly aligned with actual career demands. For instance, the Financial Analysis course used to focus merely on theoretical indicator analysis, leaving students incapable of judging real corporate financial conditions and putting forward effective recommendations. Second, traditional lecture-based teaching dominated, students received knowledge passively, limiting their engagement and practical competence development.
After in-depth brainstorming, the Department of Financial Management put forward corresponding suggestions for improvement: First, clarify outcome orientation. Target career demands, specify career development paths corresponding to each course, formulate targeted course objectives, and embed competence training into specific courses. Second, diversify teaching methods. Introduce case teaching, project-based learning, group discussions and other approaches to fully stimulate students’ learning initiative during instruction.
This seminar has laid a solid foundation for follow-up work such as revising the talent training program, improving teaching methods and perfecting the curriculum evaluation system. Relevant measures will be gradually rolled out in the new academic year to ensure effective implementation and tangible outcomes of the OBE concept in the teaching of the Financial Management Program.
